Story by Singwa Kahale and Chediel Mziray

Magreth Cosmas Nchimbi faced immense challenges in attempting to overcome her dependence on drugs. Despite numerous attempts to quit, the cycle of relapse seemed unbreakable, leaving her feeling trapped and hopeless. It was in 2020 that her Sister Monica introduced her to the Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) clinic at Temeke Regional Referral Hospital (RRH), a comprehensive approach that combines medication, counselling, and behavioural therapies to assist individuals in their journey to recovery.

Under the expert care of a compassionate Temeke MAT clinic health provider and MDH team, Magreth began her MAT journey. A carefully tailored medication regimen, designed to alleviate withdrawal symptoms and reduce cravings, played a crucial role in stabilising her physical and mental health. The medication provided the necessary foundation to build a new life free from the shackles of addiction. Magreth has been attending the MAT clinic for 3 consecutive years.

But MAT went beyond simply managing the physical aspects of her addiction. It provided her with a comprehensive support system that included counselling and behavioural therapies. Working closely with MAT-skilled therapists from Temeke RRH and MDH, Magreth was able to identify and address the underlying issues that led to her addiction.

Through individual and group counselling sessions, she gained valuable insights, developed coping mechanisms, and eventually joined Vocational training at VETA Changombe, supported by MDH from PEPFAR funds through the CDC in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Drug Control and Enforcement Authority (DCEA), where she learned valuable life skills, including Baking cakes and Soap production, to navigate the challenges of recovery successfully.

"I am grateful for my mentors at Temeke MAT Clinic, which is supported by MDH with funding from PEPFAR through CDC, to help me achieve my dream" Magreth said

As time passed, Magreth gradually regained control of her life. She rebuilt broken relationships, mended bridges, and discovered a new career, and now she bakes Cakes and produces locally made medicated soaps. MAT provided her with a foundation for stability and empowerment, allowing her to focus on personal growth and establish a fulfilling life in recovery.

Today, Magreth stands as a true testament to the transformative power of MAT. Her personal journey from the clutches of addiction to a life of purpose and wellness serves as an inspiration to others facing similar battles.

Regarding her wishes in 5 the five years to come, she said, "I wish to grow more in Soap production and extend my Cake baking skills and maybe have a space where I will even train my peers who faced the challenges I have been through".

Through her story, she raises awareness about the effectiveness and potential of MAT, emphasising that recovery is not only possible but within the combined effort of the therapist, family and community at large. With continued access to MAT and compassionate care, countless lives can be transformed, enabling individuals to reclaim their lives and embrace a brighter, drug-free future.
