About the Project
MDH, supported by the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), is working with the Government of Tanzania to implement the Afya Jumuishi Project. This initiative operates in Dar es Salaam, Kagera, and Tabora, in collaboration with Tanzania's Ministry of Health, the President's Office of Regional Administration and Local Government, and the corresponding Regional and Council Health Management Teams. The project involves a total of 573 health facilities across these three regions: 200 health facilities in Dar es Salaam (5 districts), 201 health facilities in Kagera (8 districts), and 172 health facilities in Tabora (8 districts).
The Afya Jumuishi Project aims to provide comprehensive HIV prevention, care, and treatment services to achieve the global HIV targets of 95-95-95 by 2030.
Prevention Services include:
HIV prevention for high-risk populations, Prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT), Voluntary Male Medical Circumcision (VMMC), Interventions for Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW), Gender-Based Violence Prevention, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for individuals who use drugs and Cervical Cancer Prevention (CECAP)
Comprehensive HIV Care and Treatment
Services include: Anti-Retroviral Treatment (ART), Adherence and Retention Support, Multi-month dispensing of anti-retroviral medications, Community ART, Management of Advanced HIV Disease, Integration with Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), TB Preventive Therapy (TPT) and TB treatment for People Living with HIV (PLHIV), Viral load testing and viral suppression and Enhanced adherence support.
Health System Strengthening
Efforts focus on: Laboratory and Supply Chain Management, Health Information Systems and Human Resources for Health (HRH).
This comprehensive approach ensures that the needs of people living with and affected by HIV are effectively met across the targeted regions
